Ryder drove into the basement carpark to find Vanessa unloading skis from the back of her SUV. She turned and waved, a sunny smile lighting up her face. Ryder pulled in beside her car and lowered the window. âIâll give you a hand.â
âI meant to unload these yesterday,â she said as he climbed out, âbut I was so tired, I couldnât be bothered. Who knew Iâd find driving more tiring than ski patrol?â
She stepped in for a hug, and the tension melted away from Ryder as he embraced her. âBetween the two of us weâve covered some ground in the last few days,â he said when they parted. âI gave Eva a call, but it went through to voicemail.â
âDid you leave a message?â
âNo, we needed to get on the road.â Ryder looked at the skis. âWhich ones do you want me to carry?â
Vanessa pointed to two sets of skis propped against a wide cement column. âThose two?â
âSure.â
âBe careful of the edges,â she warned.
âThese are nice,â he said, looking down at a black pair with a slight curve and a bright orange tail.
âTheyâre racing skis. They donât flex easily.â She hoisted two pairs onto her shoulder with the practised ease of someone whoâd spent years doing it. âThey might throw you around a bit,â she said with a grin.
âIâd probably kill myself.â
They loaded the rest of the skis into the elevator and Vanessa pressed the button for their floor. âI donât like leaving them in the car,â she said. âAre you sure you donât mind them being in the apartment?â
âProvided youâre in the apartment, I donât mind at all.â
âThank you.â
âWant a beer?â she asked when they were finally inside and the skis were stowed in the spare room.
âI wonât say no,â Ryder said, sliding open the balcony door. He stepped out into the city air, so much warmer than in Jindabyne. To his left, lights shone from an adjacent apartment building, illuminating the kidsâ playground below. To his right, the Lane Cove River glimmered like a black ribbon in the darkness.
He turned as Vanessa stepped onto the balcony. âIâm sorry we missed each other,â he said.
âMe too. Never mind.â She clinked her wine glass against his beer bottle and took a sip, her eyes shining at him over the rim. That was one of the things he loved about her, she never made anyoneâs bad day worse.
They sat down in the big, circular cane chairs sheâd bought the week after sheâd moved in with him. I want to be able to sit outside, Pierce, sheâd said. Before that, Ryder hadnât bothered with outdoor furniture, but sharing a drink out here with Vanessa at the end of the day had become one of his favourite pastimes.
âSo, you think Gavin Hutton is back in the Snowy Mountains?â she asked.
âHonestly, I donât know where he is.â Ryder told her about the false sighting on the beach at Jervis Bay. âI still feel the most credible sightings of him were those along the Alpine Way this time last year.
